Before Jim Henson became world famous for his highly imaginative puppet work, he made several experimental short films. "The Cube" is Henson's 54-minute experimental existential comedy about a man (Richard Schaal) who suddenly finds himself trapped in a cube that he can not get out of; despite that fact that others can come in and out as the please using "their doors". Many participants and friends would later be Henson collaborators, including Jerry Juhl (who co-wrote the screenplay and who would go on to write a lot of Muppet material). It was originally made for television to air as part of a short-lived "Experiments In Television" varied source slot. The film also features a cool experimental electronic score by Walter Sear.
"Time Piece" (made before "The Cube") is Henson's 8 and 1/2 minute gleeful experimental romp through modern man's maddening experience. It is perhaps one of the best short films ever made. Curiously, it was nominated for a "Best Short Subject, Live Action" Oscar in 1966; but don't let that dissuade you from seeing it.
Both come on 1 disc.
