"The Mad Death" (1983) (Robert Young)
Rare and unsettling British mini-series (edited together into a feature) about a rabies scare/outbreak in England. The first and most bluntly scary episode centers on an American businessman who contracts rabies from a wild fox he picks up on the highway on his way home from a business trip. He begins to suffer from mysterious symptoms and ends up at the hospital. From then on, we get terrifying insight into horrors and hopelessness of rabies as we are taken through the awful stages of the disease giving the man mad fits of terror, foaming at the mouth and fevered hallucinations before finally coma and inevitable death. It's a stark, gripping and shockingly terrifying first chapter. The remaining running time deals the escalating threat of outbreak across the countryside. A special team is put together, headed by a rabies outbreak specialist. Quarantines are set up and animal martial laws enforced. But despite the precautions and warnings to the public wild incidents still occur; including a stupid old woman who lets a stray (naturally rabid) German Shepherd into a crowded shopping mall.
