Controversial Czech New Wave shocker from Juraj Herz. An extremely dark psychological horror satire with amazing cinematography and surreal imagery. A wealthy cremator in WWII Czechoslovakia becomes philosophically obsessed with his job to the heights of insanity. He believes that cremating people frees them to the afterlife and reincarnation. He joins up with the Nazi occupiers to gain more power and decides that his family needs to be killed. He murders the head of the crematory and takes over. He dreams of building a larger crematorium to cremate anyone he deems necessary. Disturbing, surreal, horrific and hallucinatory.
